Part Red Dwarf, part Space Academy.

Part Red Dwarf, part Space Academy.

As the Rosetta probe successfully lands on its comet. It felt like the right time to complete this model.seekersa This model was inspired by two different things. First would be the Space Academy station from the 1977 Saturday morning TV series by Filmation.  The series followed the adventures of several young cadets. The Academy was a man-made planetoid. Which they used to explore the mysteries of space. It was a kids show, and far from what I would call serious Sci-fi.

images2The other influence was the 1988 British Sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf. The ship was the oldest and largest in the Jupiter Mining Corps. fleet. It mined and ferried ore across our solar system until a radiation leak killed the crew. All accept Lister who was in stasis. And the descendent of his pregnant cat Frankenstein. The Sci-fi in the show was merely a backdrop for the comedy. More comedic and Sci-fi, I loved this show.

IMG_0535    Somewhere between the children’s lessons of morality and comedy lies some serious Sci-fi. Well, that’s where I started. And ended up with this. It doesn’t have a name yet. But I was so happy to be done that i couldn’t wait to share it. The asteroid was made by using the bases from the Seaquest and the Seaquest Stinger models. The landing pod was an extra part from a resin Battlestar kit. The buildings are from an International Space Station model. And of course there are the odd bits of greeblies hither and yon. All coming together to create this Space station\Mining facility\City and exploration vehicle.

So, short of a name. I’m calling this build finished.
